Tiger kills?
Wondering how many apps get sacrificed for those 200+ new features. AppleTrans too was suffering from unexpected changes made deep in Mac OS X frameworks.
The side-effects would appear in a variety of ways. In the public version 1.1, AppleTrans still had issues to address in its Quick Capture feature, background batch processing, and matching long tokens indexed in Panther.
Among them, Quick Capture must be a huge loss to the version 1.1 users. That is my favorite tool actually. Those who runs the version 1.1 on Tiger, you can try this workaround to bring the feature back:
1. In the Terminal, type the following command
This command is required only once for a new user.
2. Launch AppleTrans, then choose About AppleTrans from File menu
You need to do this for each session. You can close the about box right away.
That's it. This should do the magic.

I have tried this, and still can't get the quick matching to work, using 10.4.2. I am also having the freezes when doing batch translations, I haven't had a chance to see that working yet.
That's Tiger...
You meant "quick capture"? Please let me know if you can still make multiple selection in your document (selecting discrete chunks of text using mouse plus command key). In order to allow AppleTrans to do Quick Capture, this function must be disabled.
As for batch processing on Tiger, download the following AppleTrans document, and keep it open while you run a batch translation.
BATCH ENABLER
Yes, I did mean "quick capture." I just tried it on my work computer, and it does work on this machine. I'll have to test my home machine some more. On the work machine, that prefs setting definitely disabled the multiselect in appletrans (which didn't seem to work exactly right before the setting anyway: second thing you tried to select would select for a second, then unselect itself.).
Thanks for the batch enabler file link. Unfortunately, the link came up 404 not found.
Yeah, this still doesn't work on my home mac. I have definitely disabled multiple select, it doesn't happen at all. But the highlight text never picks up any formatting. As soon as I command-click some other text, the highlighted text drops its highlighting (selection highlighting I mean), with no format change. This is 10.4.2 on a mini, if it matters.
>404
Oops. My mistake. BATCH ENABLER file was reposted to AppleTrans SIG's Files section.

In case About AppleTrans does not summon a spell, here is an alternative method you want to try:
1. Open the Segment tool and expand the view
2. Type a new name in the Description field
3. Click Record while holding option key
Please ignore what you see in the tool view. Now back to the document, try some quick capturing. Hope it works.
That batch fixer works like a charm!
Still no luck on the quick capture with this machine. strange... By the way, is the services thing supposed to be working in 1.1? I have never seen an AppleTrans service available in any other apps, both with 10.3 and 10.4.
>batch
Good to hear it works!
>Quick Capture
Hmm... I will see a bit more on that.
Services should be available on both OS. Please make sure that:
- you can locate AppleTrans under Applications folder
- client apps are Cocoa based
Most Carbon apps do not take advantage of Services menu. Check with AppleTrans itself if you get AppleTrans items under Services menu. And see if those menu items are enabled when you select some text in a document.
Oh good grief. My apologies. Somewhere in reinstalling this system a few days ago, my prefs for appletrans had to be reset. I didn't recheck allow quick capture. it now, of course, works fine. Sorry about the bad report :(
That's okay. Good to know it works. I checked the workaround with several system configs except the mini. So wondering what could go wrong on that box...
